▷ the more you know
▶ SIGHT: Max stands at 5'11" tall, with perpetually shaggy blonde hair, blue eyes and a copious amount of freckles. He's slim and lanky, was at one point slightly toned from months of military service, but has since lost most of that definition from a desire to do as little as possible following his exit from the war.

For the most part, Max will always seem comfortable in his own skin. There's a casual confidence to him, especially around people he knows.

» DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS: Max is easily distinguishable from any doppelgangers previously in Darrow. Max stands a few inches shorter, does not keep a moustache and prefers his hair shaggy.

» STYLE: Max's style is casual and haphazard. He wears jeans and brown slacks and khakis, polos of various colors, often layered with a patterned button up shirt. When it's cool, he'll wear his green army jacket from Vietnam, mostly out of habit. Max doesn't put a lot of thought into fashion in general, but still retains a lot of the preppy inclinations leftover from his upbringing and from Princeton. He'll wear Keds and loafers without socks when it's warm enough.

Max usually keeps his blonde hair long and a bit shaggy, and he'll never be found with it as short as he was forced to keep it in the military. He doesn't generally keep facial hair, these days making sure that he's distinguished himself from any doppelgangers in the city, but he's not clean shaven either, usually sporting at least a little bit of stubble.

▶ SOUND: Max's accent is vaguely north-eastern, the tone of his voice easy and almost languid. He doesn't often raise his voice and isn't particularly quick to anger, but speaks quickly, his voice whiny when agitated. Though he's not as prone to it as he was before the war, Max is often quick with an easy joke to lighten serious situations, and will often disguise his concern with flippancy, especially when it comes to the subject of his time in Vietnam. Plucked from the late 1960's, Max's speech is often littered with bits of slang from that time period. He can make phrases like "wicked cool", "cherry ride" and "groovy" sound surprisingly natural.

▶ SMELL: Depending on both the day and the time of day, Max often smells surprisingly clean and like unscented soap, as he's not normally one for cologne or aftershave. On rare occasions that he does wear cologne, he prefers smoky and leathery scents. The smell of either cigarette or pot smoke clings to his clothes and hair, as Max is a frequent smoker of both.

▶ TOUCH: Max dispenses affection easily and often, especially among people he knows well. It's not uncommon for him to throw his arm around a friend's shoulders or to kiss them on the cheek or forehead. He will often encroach into his friends' personal spaces without a second thought, and usually doesn't mind when the same is done to him. He's used to living in cramped quarters, both during his time in the military and back in Sadie's loft. On the rare occasion that he rejects such expressions of affection from others, it's due to issues related to PTSD.

▶ DEMEANOR: These days, it depends on the day. Max has lots of days when he's Max before the war. Personable and friendly, he can be quick with a quip or a joke, easy and taking things as they come. He's accepting of most anyone until they give him reason not to be, and unflinchingly loyal to those he cares about.

▶ SPACES: Max lives in a two story, top floor apartment that was previously also occupied by his boyfriend and his boyfriend's son, Gus. Max doesn't have a lot of stuff in general, but he's prone to leaving his jackets draped over furniture instead of hanging them up, and sometimes needs to be prodded to fold clothes instead of just stuffing them into dresser drawers.

▶ INFORMATION FOR PSYCHICS AND OTHER MAGIC USERS: It's completely okay to use both magic and psychic abilities, such as mind reading on Max. He has no powers of his own, and is unaware of the extent to which they exist in Darrow.
» To say Max's mind is a bit of a mess is an understatement. It's a muddle of repressed and attempted repressed memories about Vietnam. Max has seen a lot of people die, has been though months where he was terrified for his own life and is a changed person because of it. He often downplays the seriousness of his mental state ("everything below the neck works fine"), but the experience changed him profoundly. Panic attacks and anxiety are brought on by reminders of a time when he feared for his own life constantly. He sometimes masks an unease in crowds, a buzz of nerves and dread underneath the surface that he tries not to let show. Max isn't in denial that he's a different person, but actively rails against it, often pretending that he's fine when he's not. There's an anger there that he's not the same person who got that draft letter in the mail.

▶ MAGICAL ABILITIES: Absolutely none. Max is a normal human with no magical abilities and average human endurance and strength.

▶ MEDICAL INFORMATION: Max Carrigan is a physically healthy male in his early-twenties. He previously suffered minor injuries during his time in Vietnam, and then several scrapes and bruises early into his stay in Darrow, but they've since healed. He also previously broke his arm in Darrow, and even though that injury is also healed, it still bothers him on occasion.

However, Max still suffers from PTSD, a condition acquired as a result of the war and exacerbated by spending three days in Silent Darrow. He has panic attacks, flashbacks and semi-frequent nightmares. His panic attacks are usually triggered by being reminded of the war or of Silent Darrow. Backfiring cars and fireworks are normal triggers, and Max avoids night clubs and concerts often, as they will sometimes cause him anxiety. He currently attempts to combat feelings of anxiety with alcohol, and consumes multiple drinks per day.

▶ GOD-MODDING: Jude. Brian.
